hi welcome to literacy links I'm going to talk to you today about syllables we want to teach you what syllables are and specific syllable types and why knowing syllable types is so crucial for literacy development first off why do we need to teach syllable types well dividing words into smaller parts are chunk help speed the process of decoding knowing the rules or syllable division can help students read words more accurately and fluently understanding these syllable types can also help students learn how to spell words correctly as well so we're going to talk first about what is a syllable I'm going to share my screen with you and we're going to talk about syllables the syllables a syllable is a part of a word that has a vowel sound and as early as kindergarten students will be asked to count the number of syllables that words have for example your child might clafoutis syllable such as turtle Turtle the way we teach students is that a syllables kind of like a Beat and each beat has a vowel sound so it's important for students to know what are vowels what are vowels car and the sounds that they make let's start with a the letter a is a vowel that can make two sounds it can make a short a sound I like an apple it can make a long a sound when it says its name a makes a short vowel sound that is Ed like Ed or it can say its name e short I sound says it like an itchy and when it makes the long vowel sound it says it's dang I oh the short o sound would be like Olive the long a sound says it's name-o you the short u sound is like up and when it says it's name it can say you or sometimes it can even say who the recognizing what levels are and the sounds they make are important now choose the Pacific syllable types that going to talk about today are open and closed syllables so the closed syllable is the most common syllable type that we encounter in Reading a closed syllable essentially exactly what it looks like it is closed off being it has a consonant at the end that closes off The Vow when the syllables closed it makes that vowel have a short vowel sound so as you can see down the row of closed syllable this word would be bet with the short vowel sound closed off with a consonant e now the open syllable is there is no consonant that closes off the Val there is a Val all of these words end with the about and a vowel is long which means they say their name like the no high being able to recognize the difference help the child know when we in what are multisyllabic words whether or not they should pronounce the word with a short vowel sound or a long vowel sound let's take a look at some examples this is a Google document that that was created and it literally just showing a house with a door that closes the vowel off so for example this word would be got as a closed syllable but as the door opens if it comes an open syllable go this is a closed syllable hip so I know my Valley short when the door is open it ends with a valve my valid long and it said hi there's a couple different ways that you can help support your child with this at home the one activity you can do at home is literally just to take a blank piece of paper or an index card write an open syllable have your child read those even if they're kind of nonsense make a flap with a consonant and have them physically close the Valor and read that word with a short vowel sound now it was me and then it met another great visual activity is to write your open syllable on the frame of your door and then put a consummate on the actual door so when you close it it may the closed syllable when you open it there's an open syllable your child will use these open and closed syllables as we encounter and learn to read larger multisyllabic words if you have further questions or would like further suggestions on teaching open and closed syllables or how to count syllables please reach out to your child's teacher or a member of the letter c.k. will be glad to help you will see you next time
